Win and You’re In: Women’s Basketball’s Path Into NEC Tournament

February 29, 2020

When the FDU women’s basketball team travels to play Bryant at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 29, they will have an opportunity to clinch a spot in the Northeast Conference tournament.

The Knights are 10-16 (7-8 NEC) and currently sit fifth in the conference standings. The log jam of teams at 6-9 in the conference makes FDU’s spot in the conference tournament far from certain.

FDU has three games remaining in the 2019-2020 season and must avoid a letdown at the end of the season that will leave them on the outside looking in at the conference tournament.

The Knights final two games, after Saturday, are at home against the Wagner Seahawks and then on the road against Mount St. Mary’s.

Sacred Heart, Wagner, LIU and Bryant are all one game behind the Knights in the NEC standings. The top eight teams qualify for the tournament, and the seeding in the bottom half of the bracket may come down to head-to-head competition.

The Knight are 1-1 against the Sacred Heart Pioneers, 1-0 against Wagner with the final game on March 2, 1-2 against LIU and 0-1 against Bryant.

Head coach Angelika Szumilo looks to guide the Knights to a conference tournament berth during her first year at the helm.
