It Is Officially Tua Time In Miami

Updated: Oct 23, 2020

After a 3-3 start, the Miami Dolphins named rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa their starting quarterback for the final 10 games of the 2020 NFL season.

The Dolphins have a bye in week seven which should allow Tagovailoa to prepare as the starter, and get all of the requisite practice reps heading into his first start against the Los Angeles Rams in week eight.

Tagovailoa saw action in mop-up duty during the Dolphins 24-0 victory over the Jets this past Sunday. Tagovailoa went 2-2 for nine yards in his NFL debut.

Dolphins fans expected Tagovailoa to eventually get the starting nod, but the fact that it came this early in the season was surprising. Dolphins quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has played well in the first six games of 2020 and has the Dolphins in the AFC playoff picture.

Miami has been a surprising team this season, and the play of Fitzpartrick was one of the reasons why that was the case.

Fitzpatrick is regarded as one of the best mentors in the entire league, and Tagovailoa certainly learned a great deal from the wily veteran even during his time sitting on the bench.

Tagovailoa was drafted fifth overall in this past April’s NFL Draft after an outstanding collegiate career at The University of Alabama where he helped lead the Tide to the 2017 College Football Playoff National Championship.

Tagovailoa was injury-prone during his time in college, and that was the only question surrounding Tagovailoa as he made the jump to the next level.

Dolphins fans, and the franchise itself, hope Tagovailoa is the long-term answer for the team at the quarterback position. The team has been searching for an answer since Hall of Famer Dan Marino retired in 1999.
