George Springer Should Be Top Priority of New York Mets This Off Season

One of the best players in all of Major League Baseball is looking for a new home.

Former Houston Astros center fielder George Springer, a native of New Jersey and former UConn standout, became a free agent on Wednesday morning following the conclusion of the 2020 World Series.

Springer is a player the New York Mets should sign this offseason as he would provide the team with a dependable bat in the middle of their lineup, and a great glove in the outfield.

Springer has spent the entirety of his seven-year career in Houston and was a crucial part of the 2017 Houston Astros team that won the World Series. Springer had an October to remember as he won the Willie Mays World Series MVP in 2017 hitting .317 in the "Fall Classic."

In 51 games in 2020, Springer hit .265 with 14 home runs and 32 RBI’s.

Springer is a three-time all-star (2017-2019) and a two-time Silver Slugger Award winner (2017,2019).

The New York Mets enter the 2020 offseason coming off an extremely disappointing season. The team entered the 60-game season with lofty expectations but finished fourth in the National League East with a record of 26-34.

The Mets starting outfield for most of 2020 consisted of Jeff McNeil in left field, Brandon Nimmo in center field, and Michael Conforto in right field. If the Mets were to bring in Springer, it would presumably be to play center field because that is by far their weakest position in the outfield.

Springer has extensive experience playing both center and right field, but the Mets should not move Michael Conforto. While Nimmo is a solid player, and a fan favorite, Springer would be a humongous upgrade for the team.

The presumed next owner of the Mets Steve Cohen said he wants to make a huge splash in the “Big Apple," and will not allow the team to be financially hamstrung like they were for far too many years during the Wilpon era.

Springer would be a great first domino for Cohen as he tries to bring a championship back to Queens for the first time in 34 years.
